Janesville, WI Chiropractor Discusses Health Benefits of Tea and Coffee

Tea is widely known for its medicinal properties since it first sprouted 3,200 years ago in the Chinese province of Yunnan. The best known teas are green, black, white and oolong. The harvesting and processing of the tea leaf determine how a tea is classified by type. White tea and green tea leaves are steamed to stop oxidization, but they do not undergo fermenting or processing like black and oolong tea.

Coffee had a bad rep for many years with such claims that it will stunt your growth, cause heart disease, and cancer. All of these claims have been proven false and coffee has shown to have many health benefits as long as it is used in moderation due to its high caffeine content.

Pros of Coffee

Coffee boosts antioxidant levels known as polyphenols, these help to keep disease-causing chemicals from damaging cells. Coffee minimizes inflammation and by drinking one to three cups of coffee per day, inflammation may be inhibited, thereby “reducing the risk of cardiovascular and other inflammatory diseases in postmenopausal women” (Am J Clin Nutr2006;83:1039).

Coffee Enhances Your Well-Being

Chlorogenic acids, which are found in coffee, work similar to an antidepressant in the body. Also found in coffee is trigonelline which may have a sedative effect on the brain. Drinking just one cup of coffee a day can decrease the risk of developing alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis by more than 20%. Each additional cup of coffee further decreases the risk by 22%. By drinking coffee, one cup can prevent the aches and pains associated with working out, cut the chances of developing Parkinson’s disease by three-to six-fold, and prevent type 2 diabetes from occurring by increasing glucose tolerance in the body. When compared to non-drinkers, men and women who drank six or more cups of coffee a day decreased their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 30-60% (Aust Nurs J 2004:11:31).

Tea is a Powerful Antioxidant

Tea contains antioxidants which are powerful molecules that help defend your body against attack from disease. Black tea and green tea have as much as ten times the amount of antioxidants than fruits and vegetables. Green tea has also shown promise in the treatment of breast cancer. It contains the antioxidant EGCG, which has been shown in research studies to help slow the progression of cancer cell growth. Green tea may also help prevent; bladder, lung, stomach and colon cancer. This powerful tea may also help reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Herbal Teas

If you are looking to avoid caffeine, herbal teas are a great alternative. They usually contain a mixture of herbs, flowers, roots and similar ingredients. Most herbal teas do not actually contain tea, while containing healthful properties, most are not as high in antioxidants as a genuine tea.

Maximizing the benefits?

Health experts say you should brew tea for two to five minutes to ensure you get a good helping of antioxidants. You may want to steep fermented teas, like black and oolong, for five minutes, as these teas take longer to release their antioxidant compounds. Be cautious when adding milk or cream to your tea as they dampen its health benefits, so best to drink it clear!

I think both coffee and tea are great source of healthy benefits. But as much as they bring benefits, both drinks should be drank in moderation, otherwise, they can lose the benefits they bring.
